Format comparison
EML vs MSG: what is the difference?
EML and MSG are both saved email message formats, but they are not the same. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right workflow for archiving, sharing or converting emails to HTML.
What is EML?
EML is a widely used email message format based on standard email structure. It can include headers, plain text, HTML content, MIME parts, inline images and attachments. Many clients and webmail tools can export or read EML files.
What is MSG?
MSG is commonly associated with Microsoft Outlook. It can preserve Outlook-specific message data, but it is less convenient for browser-based conversion because it is not as broadly supported by plain web APIs.
Which format is better for conversion?
For a simple browser tool, EML is usually easier to parse and convert to HTML. MSG files may require a separate conversion step before they can be handled by an EML-focused converter.
Which format should you archive?
If the message originated in Outlook, keep the original MSG if you need maximum Outlook fidelity. If you need a more portable email file, export or convert to EML. For everyday review, HTML or PDF copies are easier to open and share.
Recommended workflow
Keep the original message file, convert EML to HTML for readable browsing, and optionally print the HTML preview to PDF when you need a document-style copy.
